As the academic leader of percussion music in the SHCM, Yang has worked hard in academic development, faculty and talent team building and textbook compiling. Thanks to his strict and scientific education, his students have won more than 50 international prizes and over 40 domestic prizes, filling all the blanks for Chinese mainland percussion students in international competitions. Prof. Yang Ruwen (China) is one of the most influential figures in Chinese percussion education and performance. He serves as Professor, Postgraduate Supervisor, Member of the Academic Committee, and Director of the International Percussion Center at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music, where he has played a pivotal role in the development of percussion studies, curriculum design, and the training of future generations of percussionists. He has built what is arguably the strongest percussion training system in mainland China. Many winners of major international competitions, including the IPEA Competition, the TROMP International Percussion Competition, and the Jeju International Brass & Percussion Competition, have studied under him.
Prof. Yang Ruwen is one of its principal founders and driving forces of the IPEA International Percussion Competition, held in Shanghai and hosted by the Shanghai Conservatory of Music. It is organized by the International Percussion Center of the Conservatory together with the International Percussion Education Association (IPEA).
Yang Ruwen serves as:
  • Director of the International Percussion Center at the Shanghai Conservatory of Music.
  • Academic leader of percussion studies at the Conservatory.
  • Chairman of the Jury of the IPEA International Percussion Competition. He chaired both the 2023 and 2025 editions, whose juries included internationally renowned artists such as Emmanuel Séjourné, Michael Burritt, Marta Klimasara, Ludwig Albert and others.
Widely respected as a performer, he has cooperated with many renowned musicians and music troupes to perform a wide range of music works and has attended many international art festivals in China, the United States, Italy, Germany, France and Austria. His artistic activities also include recording projects for film productions and albums with the Shanghai Percussion Orchestra including the published albums “The Banquet” and “Home”. He is regarded as an exceptional world-class percussion performer. Through his dedication to artistic excellence, education, and international exchange, Yang Ruwen has made a lasting contribution to the advancement of percussion performance and pedagogy in China and beyond.
